PNG and WebP are not interchangeable - they were designed to solve different problems. PNG is a lossless format: it stores every pixel exactly as it was captured, and it is the most reliable web format for transparency. WebP was built by Google for the web. At matching visual quality it usually produces files 25-34% smaller than JPEG, and it still supports transparency. Converting from PNG to WebP makes sense when you want smaller files for a faster website without a quality drop you can see.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to WebP reduce quality?
A little, by design. WebP is a lossy format, so some detail is discarded permanently. At PixSquash's default quality setting the difference is normally invisible, and the file becomes dramatically smaller. If you need a mathematically exact copy, convert to PNG instead.
Will transparency be preserved in the WebP file?
Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so whatever transparency existed in the original PNG is carried through the conversion.
Can I convert several PNG files at once?
